Liberation

Translocation of intracellular phage progeny to the extracellular state as occurs in the course phage-induced bacterial lysis.

Liberation is a synonym for burst with obvious implication that phages are not "free" (that is, free phages) prior to this liberation. Such liberation also can occur by artificial means, i.e., artificial lysis.

This is the definition from Adams (1959), p. 439, for "Burst": "Yield of phage liberated by spontaneous lysis of an infected bacterium. This may be measured directly for isolated bacteria in single burst experiments, or as an average burst size in one-step growth experiments. Also the act of liberation." (emphasis mine)
